When the lens is attached a message appears "lock lens aperature ring at minimum aperature". When I do lock the aperature at the minimum setting the message goes away and the shutter-release button works. If I try any other aperature setting I get the message again and the shutter release button does not work. From what I've read about this lens the autofocus will not work on this camera body but everything else should.

You need to lock the aperture ring and then control the aperture from the body. If the ring isn't set to its smallest aperture, you won't have the full range available in S or P modes as the ring blocks the mechanism.
