Hi I am new to DSLR cameras I am looking for a 70-200 f2.8 lens to use to take pics of my daughters soccer and basketball games. I don’t know what lens will work for my camera. I have read that I need a AF-s lens for auto focus to work is this correct?

You should be fine with either of the current Nikon 70-200 f2.8 lenses or the f4 version, however the f4 version is not your best choice for sports in general, especially indoor sports.
