I would love to go full-frame one day, but all those DX lenses I have . . . seems like a waste. I'm very happy about my D7100, though!

That's a big problem for people contemplating a move to full frame. Fortunately, most of my lenses are FX (film era) lenses. I do have one DX lens and while I like it a lot, I don't plan on buying very many others.

Every now and then, I run into a sale on nice lenses from the film era that would work for either DX or full-frame, but I find myself skipping it because I like that wonderful technology of auto focus.
Well, all the film era lenses I have are AF and were bought back in the days when I used my N90S. They are nice lenses but with the exception of my 60mm Micro Nikkor, they don't get much use these days.

I went from D5100 to a D600, then a day later brought a D3 as well so now i run the two full frames. To be honest with you i rarely tale my D3 out unless I'm shooting for the job or sports, I would suggest to everyone get a D600, there the cheapest full frame on the market but one of the best.
And the way i see it, Is your going to want to move full frame (well at least most poepl i know serious photogs who shoot DX) eventually, after you get a D7100 you'll always have that itch or that knowledge that there is still more sky above you.
At least with the D600 you know it has enough Pros to justify getting it over a D800. so you always talk your way out of updating.. that is till the next round of cameras come out

While the d5300 looks awesome and has the gps and wifi function...ask yourself...will I be shooting video? If you said yes to that, you may want to look at the d5300 a little more...while the d7100 has amazing functions for it just as well, the d5300 has 1080p at 60 fps as well as a rotating screen (something I wish the d7100 had). While all of the specs matter in each camera, I think I'll be purchasing myself a d7100 at the end of this month, mainly because it has some better features such as a BUILT IN FOCUSING MOTOR, not that you need one. But you can use older AF lenses which will save your wallet and your camera some much needed money. The more customizible buttons is another thing thats really interesting me in it as well....oh not to mention the 51 focus points and 15 cross points...fantastic for wildlife and sports photography....I know what I'll be purchasing...

Another feature I like with the D7100 for action shots is putting it into the 1.3x Crop Mode. You get both a faster FPS rate and the AF totally fill the entire frame AND it narrows the field to the center of the lens which tends to be sharper then the edges. The cost is minimal; dropping your 24MP to 16. A worthwhile trade off if you ask me.

I'd recommend D7100, but its also a bit more expensive
Actually ... the more I hear about the D5300 the more I want D7100, ... both are almost the same price and the d7100 is much much MUCH better :-)
There is only one correct answer to the question raised by the OP. Halabya got it correct. Save your money and get a D7100. I hope this helps.

What I suggest you do is make a list of things you will use and will not use on both cameras. Eliminate those you won't use. Then compare and try to come to a decision. Personally I find the outer controls of the 7k series to be much better than the menu based controls of the 5k series.

D3000 to D5300 = Considerable upgrade
D3000 to D7100 = Vast Upgrade
The D5300 has a smaller, lighter body. I would suggest holding both in your hands and playing with the controls to get a "feel" for which one you prefer.
For myself, I much prefer the feel of the D7100 to my D5100 as I have large hands. D7100 will definitely be my next body (if I stay with DX).

I went from a D80 to a D7100 and D610.
Imagine how much my mind is blown.

I went from a 5100 to a 600 to a D3 in a matter of weeks the upgrade from the D600 to the D3 was.
Just think logically, can you afford the D7100? if yes get it, so you have one less hurdle to jump in the long run

They are very similar but not identical. I switch back and forth between them almost as if they were the same camera. The D610 has a couple less buttons on the back, so I suppose the D7100 is a bit more sophisticated but not by much.

I'm not as advanced as Alden - I'm behind by a pocket camera (110) but I switch back and forth between the D600 and the D7000 frequently and he's correct about the usage. I some times have to think about which I have in my hand...both also produce great images although I prefer the D600 over the D7000 - especially in low light...
Alden - I'd be interested in your opinion - how would you compare the images from the two bodies?

The wi-fi of the 5300 and the lower price would still make me choose it over the D7100. I find that after using the wifi so much on my Samsung NX20, that when I'm holding my D700, I get very disappointed that I can't just press a few buttons and zap the shot to someone's computer. The wifi has become an invaluable tool to me now. Once I've used it, I don't even want to be using a camera without it! It needs to be a key feature on all upcoming DSLRs. I mean, can you imagine taking a photo on your phone and NOT being able to instantly text it or email it? That's they way I feel about my camera now. It has to have it!! Waiting until you get home, indoors, or even removing the card on location and inserting it into a laptop has become so passé.
