Hi friends,

Really stressed.

I have taken photos on a Nikon D3400. I tried to transfer from SD card to my laptop. However my photos are in 3 folders - it appears when one folder reaches 999 photos a new folder is created. The folder name is different but the file names are duplicated. So there is no way for me to have them all in one folder without manually renaming thousands of photos.

I understand from browsing that photo number sequencing was off and i have turned it on now.

However what can i do right now in order to get all the photos on my SD card into one folder and be sequentially ordered so that i can manage them more easily. is their a fix on the computer or via some software?

I don't think there is a way to do that because the file/folder structure is part of the camera's firmware.  I have had several Nikons and they all organized folders and files the same way, meaning that you can identical file names in different folders that are identified only by a cryptic number.  Indeed that can get confusing.  Being a Mac user, the "Get Info" function will show you the date of those cryptic folders so I at least know which ones can earlier and I assume there's a Windows function that's similar, but I find myself trying to pull out images I might use onto separate media just because of the strange naming convention.  It's a pain to go back to an old flash card and try to look for a picture.

If you are on a mac, Photos can batch rename your files to a usable format.

If you use Windows, Faststone Photo Resizer is freeware.

If you want a reliable DAM solution, Lightroom is easy to learn and the monthly fee is relatively low.

Another DAM solution is Photo Mechanic.

I use this naming convention:

[Signature]_[Date]_[Time]_[Focal length]

followed by a letter to make it possible to recognize which is whitch of photos shot the same second.

This only applies to files on your computer. You should not use memory cards for permanent storage as they are less reliable than an SSD, HDD or optical media. I would recommend making a backup to an external drive and, if possible, cloud storage to get an off-site backup of irreplacable files.
