I sold everything to get it, except for my Nikkor AF-P 70-300 f/4.5-5.6E ED VR which I will be using on it until (a) I’ve sold some more stuff and ( b ) I’ve decided on a long-term lens plan.
Current thinking involves a 70-200/2.8FL and a fast normal prime - possibly an AF-S 35/1.4 or 58/1.4 An indulgence but I do like a fast prime.
Any thoughts?

Congratulations!
With the 70-200/2.8 I would consider the 24~70 ƒ2.8… a brilliant
"no way back" addition. It would add a great 24~200 ƒ2,8 range.
The 14~24 ƒ2,8 would be my next move.
This would complete the Nikon Trinity but don't forget to AF fine
tune all three to the newly acquired body.

I’m afraid I don’t have enough toys left to sell to get that lot!Congratulations!

It’s really a decision about whether the zoom I have will focus, especially tracking, as fast as the ‘pro’ 70-200mm f2.8 FL. If so, I’ll go that route and let the increased resolution (over my previous D610) take up the slack of the loss of focal length. I particularly want the FL because they’re supposed to be sharp wide open. All the other 70-200/2.8 I’ve tried have been noticeably soft at 2.8.
Other than that zoom, one fast prime will do me. I’ve always liked 50mm but 50 is quite close to 70 and I have a hankering for a 35 for low-light, interiors and as a relatively compact walk around lens.
If I ever need anything else, I tend to buy them off eBay and then sell them afterwards - if you buy ones that look pretty ‘right’ but have bad pictures and an unimaginative description, you can usually make a profit on them too!

I agree with Nikonshooter that the collection with 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200, all f/2.8, is a great set. Now I'm a fan of recent Tamron and Sigma lines. If you would like to get really great lenses for about half the price of Nikon branded, have a look at Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 G2 and Sigma 14-24 Art.
To see if they are good enough for you, either rent or take your D850 to a store and try them out. I think that you will be surpriced

I have a friend who is quite happy with his Tamron lenses and he has definitely put them to the test. With the older version at least, I found the Tamron was a touch slower focusing than the Nikon and my "keeper" rate went up when I changed to the Nikon 70-200 VRII. It is definitely my most used lens. I will also recommend the 24-70. Since I shoot lots of sports, I went to the opposite end to complete my trinity and got the 200-400. I may end up getting the 14-24, but haven't really needed it as yet.

I HAVE wanted more than the reach of my 400 though !
The only way I know to get that extra reach was to get the
600mm ƒ4 mounted on my D850. I don't think I will ever ha-
ve the chance to hand the 800 ƒ5.6 with TC in this lifetime.
TCs are not good enough for me and DX is no solution either.

Same issue for me...I usually end up with the 70-200 on the D500 and the 200-400 on my D4 with the 24-70 on my more beat up D4. The DX helps but isn't the best answer. I have lots of different ideas floating around in my head about how to change around my current gear to "different" gear (don't want to say new)...just need to decide what makes the best sense for me in the short and long run...

Actually, I can't say that I've found myself wanting a wider angle than 24 (or the 18 on DX that I used for awhile). I HAVE wanted more than the reach of my 400 though !
Yep, I’d go along with that for what I mainly shoot.

I think that you would be well served, at least in the short term, with the AF-S 70-200 f/2.8 and the AF-S 24-70 f/2.8. These two lenses would cover the vast majority of the focal lengths you usually use... or at least the ones that you use to photograph the images you post to the forum. I do understand the allure of really fast primes though. I've fell for it myself a time or two. Unfortunately, at least in my case, those lenses often did little more than add (considerable) heft to my camera bag. And, ditto for really long lenses. I rarely carry long glass anymore. But then I'm getting old.
My third lens would be something really wide... maybe the wide end of the trinity or perhaps something else equally as wide. But then I love wide angle lenses. You've indicated that you're not as enamored of them as I. Each to his own I guess.
Enjoy your new ax!

from someone that owns gen 1 nikon 70-200mm wish at time i would gone out and got 24-70mm f/2.8 since give me reach the 70-200mm does not have. so give lower need reach i need for volleyball basketball or tennis for me. i would get 2 of holy trinity lenses. unless need ultra wide angle lens then. you having 24-70mm and 70-200mm give reach you need. and will work well since never know if going to be low light situations. if found that when i got my S lens for Z6 wish had 24-70mm F/2.8. you also find that third party lens will be good way to go. will get 14-24mm sigma over time and maybe 24-70mm F/2.8 sigma since make better third party lenses i want now. i have 12-24mm dx lens love it. so save cash up to buy new or used. you find like all other said about 3 holy trinity lenses make great set to have. also people that know me and see me shoot. know my main lens is nikon gen 1 70-200mm F/2.8.

i would use my 12-24mm more but low F/stop and hard to get to many car show or good place for architecture since live area to many nature walk trails

For me it's about putting the investment in where I shoot the most.

I had a 24-70/2.8 before and I hated it, really hated it. Since everyone else loves it, I guess it’s just a clash of personalities but it would have to be the only remaining lens on Earth before I put one on my camera again. The 24mm angle, I love, and I’ve had a couple of 24/2.8D lenses which I tend to buy for a particular job and then sell on. I don’t use them often enough to keep one.
I have always promised myself that one day I’d have a 58mm f1.4 but the 70-200 would ‘make sense’ from a dog photography point of view and the 58mm focal length is a bit close to 70mm... However I have recently become aware of the even more ridiculously priced 35/1.4 which seems to be of the same character as the 58 but usefully further away from 70mm. It’s finding a second hand one that’s proving problematic. Of course, I could keep that zoom I’ve got and buy a new one! Now there’s another possibility that’s going to taunt me all day:D
