While out and about my neighborhood last couple of days shooting everything in sight, I noticed that when I press down the 

 

the shutter release button, the image jumps up just a bit.  When I take my finger off of the button (without taking a shot) the 

 

image falls down.  I am hoping that the optics have not separated from the adhesive.  Just now prior to getting onboard NF, 

 

I very gently shook the lens and I could hear rattling as something has obviously come loose.  Now I am curious as to

 

perhaps this is the reason the VR is not all that great.  The lens still takes great photos.  I tried this issue on both D200 

 

bodies and it is the same event.  Going a little further I am also wondering if this is the reason the lens does not perform well

 

while in P Mode.  Granted it is an old lens as is evident by VR letters in Red.  Cheers.

Image movement in the viewfinder as the VR settles is not unusual, as for the rattle it is often just the movement the elements have to cover the VR range.

Thanks very much for your reply.  Nice to hear good news at times.  However, I am not sure I follow your meaning regarding the rattling as the lens was off of the camera when I shook it a little bit.  According to Advance Camera here in Portland, the rattling is not a typical characteristic of Nikon lenses and that I should bring it with me next time I am in.  Hopefully some time today.  Will keep posting.  Thanks again, Tony
