For no apparent reasons, this Ruddy Shelduck hen took off
to attack a Swan. The chase went on for about a minute but
she did not reach the big bird…

They are territorial. In other words, "This is my house." tt
Yes, Tony, territorial they all are… but that applies to their respective
nesting area. The marsh is more like a cruising park, a hang out joint,
or a restaurant where one's territory is no larger than the plate on the
table one is sitting at.
