Hi,

New member here.

Own and use a Nikon D7100 for birdwatching. Have been using a Nikkor AF-S 70-300 F4.5-5.6G ED VR lens for some time but it now appears to be broken.

Have been trying to source a replacement but they don't appear to be available any more.

Anyone able to advise on a possible Nikon (or otherwise) lens which has the same performance / price bracket. I'm acutely aware that there are lenses which are not suitable or compatible with my camera

Thanks for any help

Pete

Hi Pete, where are you based? I have a Sigma 100-300 f/4 for sale at £250 (not VR) but I am based in Central Scotland. Alternatively there are a number of used (in excellent condition) 70-300 VR lenses for sale at Ffordes in Beauly (north of Inverness) who are a mail order specialist, link to the page here - Nikon AF | Ffordes Photographic

It is too bad that Nikon have discontinued the AF-S 70-300. It was much better than the competition and tremendous value for money. Finding a used one in good condition shouldn't be too difficult, though.

As you want it for birds, have you checked for used Sigma C or Tamron G1 150-600 tele zooms? They sometimes turn up at a nice price point. The Tamrons don't work on the new mirrorless cameras using ehe adapter, which drives the price down considerably...

If you can take this opportunity to go a bit longer, as said the 150-600 are good or the 100-400 although i would check if the latter are compatible with your camera.

I have been using the DX 70-300mm but I added the Sigma 100-400mm to my kit (D7500 and D5600) for the extra reach.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies, had been otherwise pre-occupied with the coronavirus situation.

Will be looking at your suggestions to see best way forward
