I don't like that kind of spirit.

Your flag, my flag… These are only symbols that have any value at all
as long as you or me are alive.

This is the ultimate thing to celebrate: LIFE… yours and mine.

GLORIOUSLY that is.

Imagine a world without flags… just each of us alive… with our kids.

Thanks, Bluzman.  Nikon Shooter has a tendency to make disparaging remarks that I believe he is not aware of how insulting they can be.  I for one am proud to be an American and always will be.  Nothing wrong with loving your country and the symbols that represent it.  America is a land based on Free Speech and if some foreigner doesn't like it, it is best to say nothing if nothing nice can be said.  Thanks again for your support.

Again? I thank you for the generosity in proposing that I may not be
aware of it and, believe me, it was not and never will be intentional.

You are right to be proud — just like I am to be Canadian and like
Malice (a German) who liked my comment. You and I had the chan-
ce to be born in an isolated sub-continent (geographically) and to ha-
ve enjoyed peace for so long… a big reason to be proud.

Malice understood the meaning of my post, even more so that he or
she is European. As a north American — like you, but living in Europe
since 30 years, I had to swallow some of my national pride learning
that nationalism is very bad and patriotism is most valuable, essential.

The way I see it, being Canadian is a matter of cultural reference, not
a national identification. A reason why I am happy to live in Europe is
the community of all the different cultures at peace with one another.
I can appreciate a world of nuances in the way to be human, a father,
a citizen and a European, the same values than in NA… just different.

If I was a young soldier — I was once young and always antimilitarist,
I would stand well armed for peace, not for a flag… but for them all.

Again, sorry if I ever hurt you, Tony, and I hope this reply clarifies my
clumsy way with English. This is not my language, just trying to use it!

Respectfully, NS.

Since I have been mentioned in the previous reply, I sort of feel compelled to comment, too, but I don't want to turn this into a political debate.

So, I'll just summarise my thoughts like this: "all my love and respect goes towards people, not national symbols".

You know, especially where I come from (geographically), flags and other national symbols have been used and abused by horrible people to do unspeakably horrible things. And as if that wasn't bad enough, at the moment this method is returning.

My apologies, if I came or come across disrespectfully, as no disrespect whatsoever is intended.

Malice, there is no offense taken by your commentary.  How you feel personally is your own business.  Even in Germany you have Free Speech and should you decide to express your love for your country, regardless of what the symbol is, that is your right to Free Expression.  What is offensive (again, I believe that NS Did not intend to be offensive) is when someone who lives in a Free Society, expresses his/her feelings/passion toward their country and someone who does not live in the same country, says something akin to:  "Oh, I just hate that, I hate it when someone does that, because in my opinion they should think the way I do."  Yeah, right.  Are you kidding me or what?

In other words, what different does it make as to what the symbol is?  A flag, a mud fence or a broken down automobile.  We do not worship the flag because it is a flag, but what it inspires us to feel toward our own land.

Remember during the Second World War, we had another flag.  It was a flag with a coiled up King Cobra ready to strike.  The caption at the bottom of the flag Read:

"Don't Tread On Me."  In other words, F-----you Hitler, Tojo and Mussolini.  That flag was very inspirational and I believe important in our being victorious in that horrible world wide conflict.  50 million people died, for one crazy politician.

Thanks for reading.

Tony, the Gadsden flag is a *little* earlier than that. It was designed in 1775 and adopted for official use 1778 if I remember my history classes correctly.

Here in Europe, lots of people don't react too well to flags and other symbols of national pride as the Nationalist movements have usurped the patriotic symbols for their own murky use.

Nikon Shooter, Irwin means that the snake on the Gadsden flag is a rattlesnake.
