Good idea shooting in black and white - it somehow suits the subject matter. You were also very fortunate (or clever) in having the place to yourself for long enough. When we were touring through Europe recently it was often frustrating trying to take halfway decent photographs at popular sites because of the crowds.

This is not exactly one of the "hot" tourist spots.
Pretty much off the beaten track.
