hello and memory card question

Hello...very excited to be here.  I am a novice photographer that has sold a canon 80D and am looking to buy the Nikon D850...I plan to have it many years so I want to " buy up" vs needing to replace it sooner.  My question is regarding the memory cards...I have been told not to put the regular SD card in and to get a SD II card...I understand those will write faster but I want to know if my standard SD cards will work as well?  B and H is giving a regular SD card with the purchase of the D850 so I assume it works?  Thanks in advance.
