Hi Guys and Gals,

I am very confused.

On the back of my D7500 there is a button marked AF-L AE-L and rumour has it that I can transfer the Shutter Button Auto Focus etc to this back button, (so the shutter button just operates the shutter) which I really want to try out. I have read all the books, instruction manuals Googled it and YouTubed it and still I am non the wiser. The button has been put there so this can be done right. Am I that stupid. I have got on with the rest of the stuff but this is doing my head in, Surely it should not be this complicated to transfer these attributes.

Can Someone out there please tell me how to do this, in simple, one step stages, so this useless prat can understand it.

Thank you so much.

I am very confused.

a6: AF Activation

button ➜ Custom Settings menu

Choose whether the camera focuses when the shutter-release button is
pressed halfway. If
AF-ON only is selected, the camera will not focus
when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway; focus using a button
that has been assigned the AF-ON role in the Custom Settings menu (
106).

You can download the menu description here:

You have to set a6, c1 and f1 to separate the af from the shutter button and lock the exposure value on shutter half-press.

  1. Set a6 to AF-ON only.
  2. Set c1 to ON On (half-press).
  3. Set f1 to AF-ON for the AE-L/AF-L button.

In addition to locking the exposure value, a shutter button half-press activates the VR when using VR lenses and wakes the camera from stand-by.

Thanks Guys. I will try this out today.

I assume the shutter release button will still activate the VR in the lens then. All my lenses have VR.

I think half my problem is understanding the camera language.

Thanks again

Yes, it will and all will go the expected way; it is just
that you specify HOW it will go. Personally, I never
use VR but it will work as well.

I think half my problem is understanding the camera language.

That's the thing about language, Nikon and Mac both
speak a language I immediately understand. Not much
so with Windows and Canon — students with both the-
se tolls are still giving me some hard times. :P

I just wondered why you don't use VR. Is there something I should know ?

We had a long discussions on that subject way back in 2013.VR on or off - Photographic Technique - NikonForums.com

There are situations where VR will reduce sharpness, and fast shutter speeds are among the worst, about on a par with using a tripod.

For the time, my big bear paws are still very stable for photography
and precise and agile for guitar so i don't yet need that thing.

I noticed, though, very cumbersome sides to it …

  • it slows down focus acquisition significantly
  • doesn't help at all to get sharper moving subjects
  • I rarely shoot from unstable platforms

Some with unstable hands may benefit from VR but remember: VR
will attempt to compensate the camera movement but NOT the subject.

VR is just another tool/setting like all the rest on your camera, you choose when it will be an advantage, that can depend on the type of photography you do and the lenses you use.

Thanks for the info guys, and one of you a guitarist too. I'm an ex drummer though I still play for the exercise.

I don't only play, I have made some of my guitars myself.

Building a Telecaster from a kit. - Post Your Photos - NikonForums.com

Another guitar build - Post Your Photos - NikonForums.com

The first one was a bit like assembling a flatpack, but the second one took some skills to build.

My next one will probably be something Lesterish with Duncan P-Rails in it.

Not just a photographer, but a guitarist and a craftsman as well. That I would say was multi talented, I think Duncan pickups are good ones.
