Last year, I witnessed (and photograph) the execution of a female Mallard
by a Greylag goose… for apparently no reason that we can see… mystery.

This week, the same goose killed a Coot; again, apparently no reason that
we can see. I arrived after the "crime" on the scene so I could only shoot
the victim.

Males of most species are very territorial and will protect against any perceived invaders that may populate the territory with their own.

When it comes to waterfowls, Tony, since they share the same
living habitat, their territory is restricted to their nesting area.

The nest is the absolute family centre, true…  but outside that

period, they're all at the marsh with the kids and everyone is
keeping and eye on common enemies: Egrets, Herons, Gulls
to mention some flying ones.

The Coot or Nikon shooter :D

I find Coots can be very aggressive going far beyond the immediate nesting area, sometimes they will cross a lot of water just to attack another Coot.

Today is my birthday and I am 23… for the third time. I suppose I
should take these words the way they were said: with a smile. :P
But tomorrow will be another thing, Mike!

Yes, Coots have a pretty aggressive nature but more so within their
own specie. Waterfowls rarely exchange animosities with birds of o-
ther feathers.
