Given we've lived in a 16 by 9 media world for the better part of the last ten years… i.e. most of us view photos posted on a 16x9 display (TV's, computer screens, phones), I can't help wonder why that, with the exception of video, I rarely see images in this aspect.

Do you ever compose with 16x9 in mind when shooting? Do you ever crop or print to 16x9? If not, why not? Are there actual reasons why you don't… or is it just due to the viewfinder being 3x2, or that print services offer mainly either 3x2 or 5x4 aspect sizes?

Would you be interested in participating in a challenge requiring composition and deliverables only in 16x9?

Thoughts?

When I was starting with my first Olympus digital I set it to 16 x 9 until I learned that it's just a crop. Since then I compose and shoot at the native sensor ratio. I occasionally crop in post to 16x9 but only to improve composition. It's more difficult to print and frame but sometimes looks better on screen.

I'd participate in a challenge based on specific ratios or formats. Maybe 16x9 for a week, square for another, portrait orientation another? My 7 days in monochrome will finish today. I have enjoyed that one and now plan to look for black and white opportunities more often.

16:9 is an option in PP, like all the other cropping options. When

it is time to consider composition, at SR, it is either 2:3 or 1:1 that
are native to my Nikons or the IQ80, respectively.

16:9 is a blessing in terms of monitor size. My RAW converter will
display a 1:1 preview with the tools on one side and the browser
on the other.

I personally like the 16x9 format even though I never use it for the type of work I primarily do. However, on the occasions when I've shot landscapes I've often either framed shots to be cropped to 16x9 or shot a series of images with the intention of later merging them into that format during post.
