Hi everyone,

I currently have a Coolpix P100 that i have enjoyed for many years but I'm thinking of upgrading to a DSLR. The one I'm thinking of upgrading to is the D3500. My biggest question is with the mobile app that you can connect it to...can you control the start, stop, & zoom of a video with it? I did read you can control the camera to take pictures but I can't find anything definite about if you can control the video with it. If you can not control the video on the D3500 with app which cameras can you?

The D3500 is Bluetooth only, and severely limited. You can use it as a remote shutter release, and to transfer low rez (2MP) photos to your phone for sharing online. That is pretty much all it does.

If video is important to you, might want to look at a Sony A6300 or Panasonic G85. They are a little higher in price, but do much better video, continuous autofocus, and pretty much full control** from the mobile app with preview.

** You mention "zoom". Note that most interchangeable lens cameras don't have Power Zoom lenses. Panasonic has a couple, not sure about Sony.
