Let's talk a bit about an old Frances Schultz reader assignment in Shutterbug Magazine from the mid nineties.

If you had just three prime lenses to shoot with for a week, what would they be?

My choices then were the 24/2.8AI, 35/2.0 O-Nikkor AI'd and the 105/2.5 AI on a pair of FE2-s, one with Ilford HP5 and the other with Agfachrome 21.

Today my choices would be the 24/2.8AF-D, the same old 35 and the 85/1.8AF-D on a D700.

On DX I would probably try using the 24AF, a 50/1.8AF-D and an old MicroNikkor 105/4.0AI.

Frances Schultz herself wrote about shooting Prague in a week on assignment for National Geographic with a 24, a 35PC and a 105/1.8 in the next issue of Shutterbug if I remember correctly

Just did a month with the 35/2D and 85/1.4D - the 35 was used most.  Adding a third would probably be my 200/2 Ai-S.  :)

oh - it was on the D700

3 primes is exactly what I currently own for my D700: the 28mm f2.8 AI-S, 85mm f1.8 AF-D, and a Tamron 180mm macro.  I've had a 50mm before, but found that I never used it so I sold it off.

Mine would be these three:

Nikkor AF-S 24mm f/1.4 G ED
Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4

Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4 G

I would have to go with:

The Nifty Fifty

Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye

Tokina 100mm f/2.8 macro

Shot with Nikon d300s

Great thought-provoking question. My first thought is to cover as much range as possible, but then I also had to think about what I shoot most--people. Perhaps these...

I'm stuck between the 35mm and 50mm...probably the 35 because the width would be nice. Nikkor, I suppose--I already have the 50mm/1.4 but not the 35.

My Nikkor 85mm for sure

Nikkor 105mm (I'm yearning for a macro lens, especially since joining this forum, and I know it's a great portrait lens...which might negate the need for the 85mm...but I love it so much--see how indecisive I am.)

All on my D600.

Yeah, that probably made no sense.

I could never use a 105mm to replace an 85mm. I'd lose the ability for interior portraits in smaller spaces. Not to mention the speed you'd lose for low light shots.

I was so focused on focal length that I hadn't really considered speed. Oh, yes, I'd hate to lose those extra stops.

I couldn't stop smiling the first time I put my 50mm on my camera after using kit lenses that could only open to 4 point something.

You make a good point. Not giving up my 85mm!

I think for my d200 it would be AF Nikkor 14mm F2.8D ED  for landscapes, AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F1.8G  for everyday photos and AF Nikkor 50mm F1.8D  for portraits.

I'd be using a 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.4 and the gorgeous 200mm f2 super chub. Just wish could afford that one though. I love it.

Think I would go for my 50mm, I need to get myself a 35mm though, might have to start saving for that.

Depends on what I wanted to shoot, but assuming I have to pick and will then be told where / what I can shoot...

I'd go with the 24 to cover landscapes / groups, the 105 for portraits, general and macro and the 200 when I needed some reach all to be mounted on my D600s...might take a DX body too just in case I want the extra reach on one of the lenses!

I just bought the 40mm micro, so now I will have three primes.

40mm f/2.8 micro

50mm f/1.8

400mm f/5.6

Not very balanced is it? :)

But, I really wanted a macro/micro, so I chose the 40mm over the 35mm or 28mm.

It's very close to a 35mm anyway.

Which of my babies do I leave at home? I guess if I didn't know what I was going to shoot, I'd take the two Sigmas (28 f/1.8 and 105 f/2.8 macro) and the 180 f/2.8. If I had an 85mm, I might choose that over the 105.

On my D2Xs, I would use a 10.5mm fisheye, a 50mm f/1.8, and a 105mm macro.

That's a lot of reach.
