With cost not being a factor...Zeiss 25mm f/2 Distagon,  Nikkor AFS 50mm f/1.4 G, and Nikkor 135mm f/2 DC on a D700.

If it was three primes on DX then it would be (irrespective if they are DX or FX lenses)

Sigma Art 14/1.4 (But I can well understand krag proposing the Zeiss Distagon 25/2)
Nikon 35/1.4 (Possibly Sigma Art 35/1.2)
MicroNikkor 200/4


If it was three primes on FX it would be
Sigma Art 20/1.4
Nikon 85/1.4
Nikon 300/2.8


If it was to use three primes but having both DX and FX body
Sigma Art 20/1.4
Nikon 58/1.4
Nikon 300/2.8

Well three is the maximum number of lenses I tend to have at any one time.

 

Currently I'm using a Sigma FP and the lenses are an 18mm f8 Funleader body cap lens (fixed focus and fixed aperture), a Sigma 45mm f2.8 DG DN I-series Contemporary and a Sigma 65mm f2 DG DN I-series Contemporary.

My choice for three Nikon primes would be my 35 F 2, D, 55 f 2.8 macro AI, and 85 f 1.8 D. Camera bodies FM-2n and my FE-2.

The three I want on Z won't be a reality for a while as the Z6II is purely a hobby camera for now and justifying yet another fast 50 and a 105 MicroNikkor for a hobby system isn't easy.

 

The trio would, however, be the Z 35/1.8 S I have got, a Z 50/1.2 S and a Z 105/2.8 MC VR S.

 

For now, I have the AF-S 24/1.8 on a FTZ, the Z native 35 and the short tele vacant for the mirrorless system.

 

 

On the D750, I use either a nice retro set of manual focus lenses. 35/2 Nikkor O, Ai 50/1.2 and Ai 105/2.5 or an AF-S 24/1.8, an AF-S 35/1.8 and an AF 105/2DC.

On the Df- Nikkor-O 35/2, factory Ai'd; 55mm F1.2 Ai, and 105/2.5 Ai. 

 

I have a lot of lenses, those are the favorites in F-Mount.

my three primes be for portraits would be 85mm 105mm macro and 200mm for astrophotography three of lower primes. if for sports 300mm 500mm or 85/105mm if outdoors. indoors primes 50mm 85mm 105mm for indoors.

The wife and I visit a new state park almost every week-end for walks, never an over night, to buggy. We use a FE, D750 and I've found that I use a 24mm f/2.8, 50mm f/1.4 and a 105 macro f/2.8. If I need to get closer or farther away, I walk.

What I plan on shooting dictates my lens selection. Where I’m going to shoot likewise dictates selection.
First choice: Nikkor 50 f 1:2; 105 f 2:5 and 35 f 2. Modestly wide, very fast, and a short telephoto.

That's easy. I still shoot w/ primes.

For my DSLR: 24/1.8G, 35/1.8G, 180/2.8 EDIF

For my SLR: 20/2.8, 35/1.4, 180/2.8 EDIF

On the Z6II, my trio are:

1. Viltrox 24/1.8
2. Z 50/1.8 S
3. Z MC 105/2.8 S

On the Zf:

1. Canon EF 20/2.8 USM on a Viltrox AF-Adapter
2. Z 40/2
3. Z 85/1.8 S

The Viltrox and the ancient Canon will be replaced with f/1.8 Nikkors as funds allow. The Canon has higher priority…

That’s a nice set of lenses, even if I prefer the older D version of the 85 as it renders subjects at portrait distances, both on DX and FX, a little softer. It will be fun getting to know the Z 85/1.8… Have I written anything about my settings for a more Tri-X/HP-5 like rendering for jpg-s SOOC?

It's a nice set for the D7000, and probably any DX camera. The 20mm serves as a close relative to my all time favorite wide angle focal length, the 28mm. The 35mm, of course, is my "normal" lens and one of the sharpest lenses I own. A real pleasure to use. The 85mm is actually a better fit on DX than it is on FX. I've shot some really good images with it on DX where it comes close to the classic 135mm focal length. The bokeh is probably not as good as your older "D" version or the current ƒ/1.4 version, but it's pretty nice. If it had rounded aperture blades it was be perfect.

 

If you've written about your Tri-X/HP-5 recipe, I've probably missed it. I always presumed that you did all your cooking in Silver EX Pro.

 

It's been a long time since I used any of my cameras as a dedicated monochrome device. I'm having to relearn some things that I had previously learned and forgotten over the years. Of course, since I'm shooting exclusively in RAW with no jpeg image at all, I'll either have to set up a recipe in ACR or use Nikon NX Studio with my in camera's picture control setting... something I've never done before.

Last time I contributed to this thread, I was using the Sigma FP and three primes. Since then. I’ve been compelled to shoot on the twin evils of Canon and DX format and my lenses have changed too. Still sticking to my three primes formula though. They are…

 

EF-M 24mm f/2.8 USM

The only native DX lens of the trio, with an equivalent view of about 38mm which is as wide as I need to go. My idea of a good standard lens. Very nice lens, it always seems to add something to an image. Ridiculously cheap to buy!

 

EF 50mm f/1.8 USM

A full-frame lens that came with the camera when I bought it. 80mm equivalent. A fast, short portrait lens, good as a walk around lens if I’m traveling light. It’d probably get a lot of use if I was more into people photography - but I’m not…

 

EF 200mm f/2.8 L ii USM

This is the one I use by far the most. 320mm equivalent and used for dog photography and landscapes (yes, really!). Heavy - but lighter than a 70-200/2.8 zoom. An older design of Canon L lens, a bit of colour fringing but not enough to bother me. I love its image rendering and colours.

 

I’d be interested to try the 200/2.8 on a full frame sensor but I’m over Canon sensors. I’m REALLY over Canon sensors. Someone would need to offer me a mint EOS 5D iv for about £100 before I’d consider another Canon body!
