Hey All!

 

I have a Z6 with no external XQD card reader.  I use a Macbook Pro for my main computer.  I tried the following steps to connect the Z6 to my laptop to transfer video and nothing happened. 

 

1) Turn off Camera

2) Plug camera into computer with USB-C (using Mac thunderbolt cable)

3) Turn on Camera

 

What am I missing?

 

I can do the WiFi, I've done this for pictures.  The WiFi is not good for the 1080/120p video I did, takes about 4 hours to transfer 10 mins of video.

The conclusion is to get a card reader.  Is seems to be the preferred method per Nikon Shooter (read below). The various softwares available to directly connect the Z6 to a MacBook may be duplicative and more burdensome than the $30 - $60 options, unless those other software packages have other use cases.

 

Thanks to all who provided feedback, if you are new to the Z6 and have the same question as listed above, it's worth reading the thread.

What version of MacOS are you on? I am not sure if Image Capture handles the Z6, but the latest release probably does.

 

Nikon did away with the mass storage mode 10 years ago, so your camera won't show up in Finder.

 

Have you tried downloading and installing Nikon's own software?

Peter, I'm using MacOS Mojave.  I have the wireless transmitter software for the Z6, is there another piece of software you recommend?  I'm going to check out image capture.

I'm using MacOS Mojave too and you don't need any software
to transfer your files. The card being in the reader, just copy to
the desktop the folder with the RAWs and get cracking.

With Mojave, Image Capture should handle the Z6.
Otherwise Nikon View NX-i should mount the camera and let you transfer your files.

A card reader is definitely the easiest way as Nikon Shooter suggests.

it took me 20 mins or more to download 1,600 photo since was half raw and jpg on card. when do it with card reader take for same amount 5 mins or less.

A card reader is always preferable to a USB camera connection

Thank you all.  I ordered a card reader.  This was a good confirmation that if anyone is looking to achieve the same thing, the best route is to get a card reader.

when buy card readers make sure they are 3.0 or thunder bolt since are fastest readers on market. also make sure you check to see what computer laptop has for usb port. some can be 2.0 or 3.0 or support thunder bolt too.

Image transfer or Nikon’s own transfer software were mentioned before the get a cardreader chorus started.
Nikons don’t mount in a conventional sense as there is no mass storage mode. PTP camera transfer solutions work, though.

A card reader that craps out after one month is still under warranty AFAIK. Just get it sorted.

There are some very knowledgeable folks on this forum who are willing to assist with issues and provide guidance.  There was good information provided options six months ago.  Probably not the best way to introduce yourself to the members here but I am sure you will get another opportunity

The solution for a mac-user is spelled Nikon Transfer 2.

Once you have connected your cable to the camera, then to the computer, turned on your Camera. Open Image Capture. You should then see your camera there and be able to download images directly to your computer. The camera will not appear as a separate drive. I found you need to use image capture to recognize the camera.
