Hi

I am just wondering why a 6000$ camera only has 16mp...

I mean It is not a camera targeting the professionals who want to print their photos in big ?

Why should I buy a D4 instead of a D800 for example ? (except for the crazy 11fps  )

This is just for info because my next purchase will probably be a D610 anyway...

Thanks

Yes, sports/action photographers needing the fast fps... plus the sensor puts out some very good images, 16 or no 16 mp

What Nesster said and better build and weatherproofing for extreme environments.  Much faster processing with better/faster buffers.

If the D800 could just do 6-8 fps and have buffers like the D4 and maybe a small RAW 24 MP mode...

16mp is plenty. How big do you want to blow it up?

These 24mp cameras are a bit of a gimmick. More mp does not necessarily mean a clearer picture.

D4 is a complete and resonable Mp camera with all the extras, but for the pro's or those who just want it.

Its the top of the tree for a reason

cheers

Chris-

The advantage of the 16mp sensor in the D4 seem to be the following: (1) the best high iso, low-light performance available; (2) resolution that is more than adequate for most users (only those making very large prints would need the D800's mega-pixels; (3) reasonably sized files that are not a burden in post-processing (not to mention that they don't fill up your memory card so quickly); (4) less demanding of 'technique'.  Blurring due to camera shake is a potential problem with a high mega-pixel camera like the D800. Tripod or high shutter speed will often be required to take advantage of the D800's resolving power; (5)  Burst rate.  In the D4 the 16mp sensor allows for something close to 10 fps (actual) --a sport's photographer's dream.

I'm not going to buy the D4 because of size and cost. However, I am very happy that the new Df has the same sensor. That will be my next camera purchase.

I'm hoping that somewhere down the line they will come out with a lower cost camera with that same sensor.

Thank you all of you for your answers.

I agree and understand what you said.

This camera looks just awesome but I think to be "perfect" to me, I would of add a little bit more mp... (I have to say that I also want to print my photos...)

As has been said earlier, 16 MP gives the best compromise of resolution vs noise with the technology available today.

Fine Art and Landscape professionals need as high a resolution as they can get, for newsprint and magazines images are rasterized anyway. 12 MP saturates the raster at 150lpi for a full double broadsheet spread, so more is unnecessary for any kind of newsprint. Therefore 16 MP gives room for some cropping in post.

If I could afford it, I'd have two D4s instead of my two D600s...Now that I have my 200-400, that's what I'm saving for...well, other than sons' college costs and retirement :(
