What is missing with the lens you have? The little kit lens is surprisingly good.

If you want to play around with a shorter depth of field for portraits, a 50 mm prime might be a good upgrade.

If you want something wider than 18 mm at the wide end, you might want to look into an ultrawide zoom. Be prepared for lots of bland photos until you learn how to use it, though. UWA photography is difficult and takes lots of practice to get something interesting.

If you just want a faster walk-around zoom one of the third-party 17-50/2.8 lenses might be your best upgrade.

A 60 mm macro lens is ánother interesting way to go as you then get both an ultra-sharp portrait lens and close-up capabilities.

When I bought my D5600 I didn't want a bunch of lenses I had to lug around and change depending on the shot.  Keeping in mind that I am not a pro and take photos for me not to sell, I choose the Tamron 16-300mm lens.  It's a great little all in one lens that has a terrific range but does have its weaknesses.  Because the 5600 does not have the ability to adjust the focus of the lenses your stuck with the softness of the lens at the ends of the ranges.  While its mostly correctable in processing its never going to look as good as a prime or a shorter zoom.

what mecro_61 said. also if  go ultra wide angle go third party since nikon 12-24mm not cheap also 50mm is around $200 but will be at 75mm since on crop body. you also have 35mm too for landscape and portraits shots too. but some what close to someone. to me good ultra wide angle and 50mm is  good start. do you have local camera store near you could try out lens said to see if will fit your needs or could rent the lenses out to test too. also did not post budget too.

Fletch, I went to the site and created an account, but it did not open a page, said something went wrong.

So you are saying AF Fine Tune does not work on lens on the D5600 or the just the lens you were looking at? ... I read up some about this .. the D5600 does not have the built in auto focus motor so the lens must have the motor .. is that correct?

AF fine tune is not implemented in the D3xxx or D5xxx bodies. You need a D7xxx or better for it to be available.

The same goes for using screw-drive lenses as the in-body motor was omitted in the D40 and later beginner (D3xxx) and slightly more advanced (D5xxx) camera models.

As Merco said the AutoFocus Fine Tuning is a feature only available on the 7000 series and up.  If you have a lens that is back or front focusing you can use this feature to adjust the camera to that lens so that it focuses better.  Merco made a post on how to make a target to check your lenses for back or front focusing.  A home-made focusing target - Do-it-yourself (DIY) - NikonForums.com

As much as I love the 5600 for its light weight all day carry, I'm kinda wishing I had gone with a 7200.

So you are saying AF Fine Tune does not work on lens on the D5600 or the just the lens you were looking at?

OK sorry to keep asking,  but I am still confused about this. I got the lens kit with my D5600, came with 18-55 and 70-300. Which I assumed were low end lens but worked for my budget and something to learn with. If the D5600 does not have a motor to AF then these kit lens do ?? my camera does the focus in Auto when I press the button half way down or that is what I understood it to be doing. so are you saying the lens you purchase did not have a motor or it did but not compatible with the D5600.

Thanks

The D3xxx and D5xxx need AF-S or AF-P lenses for the autofocus to work. There is nothing to drive the autofocus for the older AF lenses. The kit lenses for the D5600 are AF-P and have a stepper motor built-in.

The same bodies need the autofocus calibration to be spot-on as there is no way for the user to finetune the autofocus.

Irwin's Tamron 16-300 front- or backfocuses and would need a body with finetune to do its best. I am not sure that this particular lens would do any better on a D7xxx upwards body as the ones I have seen need different finetune at different focal lengths.

I didn’t know about the AF fine tune features in the Nikons and lack of it in the 5600 when I bought the 5600. This is my first Nikon camera. Had I known about it before I bought it I would have opted for 2 lenses to cover the range rather than a all in one lens. My previous cameras were a Canon 5D and 40D and I had 5 primes/3 zooms. I was tired of lugging all of it around and wanted a single lighter solution.

I bought a D5600 5 months ago, bought a macro lens and a 10-20 mm wide angle lens.  Also bought a used 70-300 mm telephoto lens when I got the camera.  The 10-20 wide angle is my favourite but the 70-300 mm is the most useful and all round versatile lens.   But whatever you get (and have now), get a circular polarizer for each one.   Even the kit lens become more amazing with a polarizer.
