Issue: the control panel does not shut off when the camera on/off selector is turned to off. Battery drains as a result. Unable to reset camera to factory settings via menu. Reset stalls until battery is removed.
Following up on some users (including this one's) control panel shutoff problem, I was able to solve mine with the following sequence of steps. Note that the last two steps are probably the ones that worked, but I'll list the steps I tried in sequence:
1. Turn camera to off position.
2. Remove battery / reinstall battery
3. Turn camera to on.
4. Using USB cable connect camera to computer.
5. IF on an Apple, iPhoto comes up.
6. With the USB cable still plugged in turn off camera. In my case, the camera control panel turned off. This proved to me that the problem was camera software related.
7. Unplug the USB cable from camera. Cycle through on/off sequence. In my case, the control panel problem reappeared. Remove battery and reinstall.
8. Remove lens from camera. Install DX lens from D5600 (in my case a 18-55) but maybe any recent nikkor AF lens???.
9. Turn on camera. Turn off camera. Control panel now shuts off.
10. Turn on camera. Do a menu factory reset. Works normally. Put on FX lens. Test. Camera works.
