Disgusted with them. I have a 18-55 AF-S basic kit lens used. The adjustment became loose so I googled it.

Found out its an easy fix as shown on youtube I have added.

Its a 3mm x 1.5mm little plastic thingy, normally they come off, mine broke. So contacted Nikon UK spares by email no response after a while so rang them, asked me to send make/model etc. just had this email from Highway Robbery (Nikon). with this quote?? I can buy a new lens for that!!

Can you confirm that the part you are after is the one highlighted in the attched picture? If so, unfortunately this is not available as a stand alone item, but only as part of the larger assembly (which I have quoted you for below). If this isn’t the right part, could you send me a picture of where in the lens the runner came from?

Listed below is a breakdown of your required part(s):

Its not just Nikon its the way lenses are made and repaired, Panasonic do a 100-400 zoom at about £1200 they consider it unserviceable to customers, if it goes wrong during warranty they take it back and give you a refurbished unit, if it goes wrong after warranty they take it back and charge just over £800 for a refurbished unit.

As it is not economically feasible to faff around with the smallest parts for commercial repairs as it takes too much time, individual spares aren't available. Instead, the spare parts are full sub-assemblies that just drop in place. When things happen to the cheapest lenses, it is often better to replace the lens than to repair it. It doesn't matter what manufacturer the lens comes from, the reality is the same.

I watched the video and it  looked like a bit of a tubing. Have you looked arround at home if there is something to cut down to size?

If you have the parts of the broken thingy, maybe you have a friend how has a 3D-printer and it's possible to replicate it??

I agree that it's not worth while to buy a original part. Then it's better to look for a used replacement lens.

I understand this but how is a less than a £, $ or Euro part going to cost more with VAT than a brand new lens?

I have emailed there big chief with my concern. Have had an acknowledgement back from him.

So maybe they might find one in there waste container from an unrepairable one.  ;)

If you read the comments on the Youtube clip, you will find out that the part can be replaced with some heat shrink tubing or an industry standard bushing that is only slightly oversized and can be adjusted to fit with careful use of a needle file.

The mechanisms of cheap mass production and (service) supply chain management.
