Dear Forum

New to digital photography, bought the Nikon 5600 and because what I shoot has a tremendous range of whites and blacks I want to use spot metering which I understand dovetails with the small box auto focus feature AF-S I believe. If I set the red box on the spot that I want to dictate the exposure so that there is data in the brightest areas of the photograph do I need to just let the shutter speed, iso and aperture remain auto as well? Bit of a swiss army watch and trying to figure out the overrides. Please suggest tutorials if you think that would help. Thanks

If I understand you correctly, you want to cope with DR issues.

Spot metering is good to get your subject properly exposed but

regardless of the values of the rest of the scene.

I would suggest the Matrix metering + monitoring the histogram

+ applying required EV compensation when necessary.
