D5 focus, shutter release button and AF-ON

For example:

 

D5

 

a8 set to Shutter/AF-ON

 

Shutter button focus set to AF-C with d-9

 

AF-ON set to AF-area mode + AF-ON

 

It seems that this setup might cause a problem with the AF system because the AF system is receiving two commands for autofocus.  Nikon engineers no doubt designed an algorithm that chooses which AF command to use. Which button has authority?

 

In a situation where AF-ON is pressed and released several times while the shutter release is held down, could this produce erratic focus commands and produce images that are not in focus? 

 

My assessment is probably in error, I want to understand how these buttons function.

The AF-ON should be used alone…  a8 = AF-ON only.

 

The functions of the release may be adapted in
a1, focus + release
a2, 
focus
