Hi, I am new to Nikon and am trying to purchase the d850 body. Just looking online I am surprised to find prices range from $3,300 from what seems to be the official Nikon sales account on Amazon to c$2,500/2,600 on certain websites. The latter do not look like a scam but I am just surprised to see such a big price gap.

Does anyone have a view on whether the lower price points are legitimate and whether there is any difference between the products?

It is common that side imports are very much cheaper. The trouble is that unless you can show a receipt from a physical store in the market the camera was meant for, Nikon service won't repair it if something goes wrong. It is not just warranty repairs, they won't do repairs at all. The same goes for items you have imported yourself... It is much less hassle to buy from an authorized retailer in your own country as you can then just drop the camera off at any retailer for warranty work or repairs instead of having to mail it off to where you bought it and hope they honour their commitment to you as their customer.

In the UK grey imports are treated the same as Merco said, Nikon will do any official recall work though.

We do have a few dealers who have good reputations and offer three year warrantys, the trouble is the warranty is with them, if they go out of business you are stuffed, i just bought a new D500 but i stay with my local camera shop.

"Grey market" items are very tempting for consumers. To avoid

the inconvenience of after sale service denial, the only condition

is a worldwide NPS recognition for prosumers.

With that kind of politics, Nikon is protecting its retailers base as

warranty repairs protects the investment of the user.

The retailer base in my opinion needs protecting, i think at the last count we had 41 truely independent one shop dealers in the UK, it will be a sad day if i loose my local camera shop after buying from them for nearly 50 years.

He matches the big boys on price (not grey) he beats them on service, if one of my cameras goes wrong i take it back and he sorts it,i even get the loan of what ever i want out of his second hand stock while its away.

Ok i pay a bit more and no i dont have loads of money to spare but i remember the good old days when good service was rewarded by loyalty.

Thanks a lot for the explanations! I will stick with an authorized retailer as I don't want to run the risk of breakdowns that won't be fixed.
