What steps do I need to take to tether my D7100 to my laptop?

by googling "tether my D7100 to my laptop" I came up with many choices this was at the top of the page. There are probably cheaper options out there.

You should just need a USB cable and Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 software. I'm sure there are other options too. I see darktable (open source image editor) has a tether option but I haven't tried it yet.
