I just got what I think is a great deal on a used but like new in box Manfrotto Bogen 3011 tripod with a 3126 head.

I think it’s a ¼” screw on the head.  It threads directly into my D5600.

I’d like to put a quick release system on it, but I see all types and price ranges.  I’m thinking the cheap ones may not hold the camera tight, thus nullifying the benefits of a good tripod.

I found this one that looks decent, but the flat surface on top of my 3126 head is approx 2 ¾” square, and I'm not sure if it will would match up to let the release latch overhang properly.

Any ideas if this is what I need?  Or suggestions of a better setup?

Thanks in advance,  Zen

I would rather look for an Arca-Swiss compatible quick release as they usually mount flat and, unlike the Manfrotto proprietary plates, there are lots of different plates that solve different problems. L-plates and nodal point plates come to mind.

I would rather look for…

Yup! Decades ago, manufacturers not only create exciting new

products but tried to establish themselves as "standard" in their

respective field. That lead to well thought out solutions that were

desperately not compatible.

Manfrotto was king in introducing solutions that proved not to be

compatible… on the long run, pro users opted for the arca swiss

system.

The referred Compact Rapid Connect Adapter will work great on

you lightweight camera but the system will not grow with you.

All my cameras have the right perfectly fitted L brackets

from Kirk… but their prices are not so low! :(

I wish they had a dedicated L bracket for the 5600, I had to buy the universal fit.

Yep, Arca Swiss is the way to go. You can get a simple tripod adapter for around 60 bucks and camera brackets for whatever you want to spend (and up). The sky is the limit both in selection and cost.

I like Kirk adapters and brackets. I have a couple of Kirk 'L' Brackets that live on my cameras. But, as Nikon Shooter mentioned above, they ain't cheap. Standard brackets however, are more reasonably priced. So, you could get by with them.

This is one occasion where a trip to your local camera store is worth the effort. And, of course, after the sales person spends time explaining how it all goes together, reward him or her by buying from them.

Quality clamps and plates are available on eBay for a fraction of what Kirk and RRS charge. I also use SmallRig L brackets and cages which are very well made and provide similar value.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.  After checking them all out closer, and checking out some youtube reviews, I actually got the Manfrotto that I posted in the original post.  It fits really well on the 3126 fluid head.  I like it because you can snap the camera in with one hand if the other is holding something else.  It snaps in with a solid click and holds everything really tight and has an extra mechanical brass lock.

I do see the benefits of the Arca Swiss and may try it in the future, but at this point I'm just an amateur, and this adapter will stay on my fluid head.  One one plate will go on my D5600, and a 2nd on my video camera.  It seems like a good solid setup for my interchange needs.

Will likely put the same or similar setup on my Opteka monopod, possibly one that I saw with tilt.

Thx again, Zen
