I have just tried to upgrade the firmware, downloading a newer version.

I followed Nikon's installation instructions, but without success.

There are several variants of the instructions; copying the downloaded file directly to the camera or using a memory card.

In my opinion non of their descriptions would win prizes for clarity.

Can anyone provide a clear set of instructions please?

I never owned a D40, so Nikon might have had other possibilities to update the firmware at the time the D40 was built.

For recent camera models (and I think it is worth trying oin the D40):

- turn your camera off
- get the memory card out
- load the memory card in a cardreader attached to your computer
- download the firmware file for your camera model (here: D40) from Nikon
- COPY the file to the MAIN FOLDER (ie. NOT into a subfolder) on the SD CARD
- use the EJECT function on your computer, before removing the SD card
- remove the SD card from your computer and
- insert the SD card into your camera
- turn your camera on

While starting the camera will look for a firmware file in the root folder of the memory card. If it finds a valid file it will start installing the updated firmware.
