I met up with someone who is wanting to buy my Tamron 70-200mm G2 today. Put the lens on her D500 and it would not focus. Not poorly focused or did a bad job. The lens did not make any attempt to try to focus. It was like it was in manual focus.

Both lens and camera were set to autofocus. We tried the different modes. Confirmed with one of her other lenses the camera was actually focusing. Tried every switch on the lens multiple times. Checked and cleaned the contacts. There were no error messages.

I got home, put the lens on my camera (D500 & D810) and it worked fine.

What could it possibly be that is stopping it from focusing on her camera.

Have you checked that the contact block is tight and positioned right? If it is only slightly loose or a little bit wrongly positioned, tolerances in the bodies can give the results you have here. The contact blocks in the bodies can all be within tolerances, but not identical.

There can also be some oxide on one pin in either lens or camera, which can make contact with other lens/camera combinations but isolate in one case.

Sometimes, the focus range limiter could be

forgotten in the wrong position.

Did try that switch, along with all the others.

Just seemed odd that the lens she tried, 50mm 1.8D (I think) worked fine and she has had no problems with her other lenses, including a Nikon 200-500mm.
