I have an issue when I turn the camera on its side, (portrait).  It's a D5500

If I'm on centre focus, for example the focus point goes and I get the line around the circumference of the focusing area highlighted - so no centre focus.

It seems to focus OK and beeps but when I return the camera back to the usual position the focusing often gets set back to auto area AF.

It doesn't always do this so I'm not sure what's going on.

Is the line of dots that appears around the focusing area signify something?

I've just had a play with it on auto AF, turned it sideways and it's ended up with centre focus just by turning it back and forth.
