When I try to read the sd card on my Mac, there are 2 folders created.  One called DCIM which holds the folder 100D850 and the folder NIKON which hold the folder D7500.  The photos taken are only in folder 100D7500. And it's empty in the folder D850. Is that normal?

it does for me when i go over 999 pictures too. when shoot over 999 pictures makes another folder for you. since can only hold 999 pictures per folder. now if do not change name file will count  all way up to 9999 but every 999 pictures will make new folder. once you go past 9999 goes back to 1 again

Nikon cameras create indeed two folders in the main/root directory. Typically the one named DCIM holds subfolders with the photos taken (while I haven’t seen the other named NIKON)

One of the hidden files also holds a pointer to the current sub-folder until it fills up (typically 999, but for the D850 I think it allows for more, photos in it)

As you mention that your photos are stored in a folder called D7500, within a folder Nikon, I suspect that your SD card has been formatted and used in a D7500 and that for that reason the D850 has some « problems » to handle everything properly.

I’d suggest to format the card, using the menu functions (or using the two button formatting), but defintely format it with the D850
(Obviously pay attention that while formatting all pictures on the card will be erased, so copy them beforehand to your computer)

I would not advise using a card previously used in another camera in your new D850. You spent a considerable amount of money for that camera. It deserves a new card.
