Camera stalls when put into live view mode. So can't take video. Can't take photos either, they come out as a white scraggly screen, usually with a purple strip near the top that may vary in height. (attached photos)

This is invariably followed by, "Error Press shutter release button again."

The error message persists regardless of what memory card is used, battery or battery power percentage, and camera settings; i.e. manual mode all the way through to effects, ISO, aperture, shutter speeds, WiFi turned on/off, metering modes, image size and quality, high dynamic range, active d-lighting, white balance, picture control, manual movie settings, frame size/frame rate, and more but like I think you get the picture.

My troubleshooting steps have included: removing the lens and inspecting the lens aperture arm; cleaning the lens and camera body; enabling, “Clean image sensor”, in setup menu; then enabling, “lock up mirror for cleaning”, (Simply to inspect. I didn't intend to remove dust or anything and found nothing obviously wrong); resetting shooting menu, custom settings, and camera to factory default setting (by simultaneously holding menu and information button until LCD screen resets); formatting memory; and installing the latest firmware version (C1.03 L2.000).

It still craps out when Live View mode is enabled. The only way to bring functionality back to my Nikon D5300 is by pulling out my 7.4V 1500mAh rechargeable Li-ion batteries, “doing a hard reset”.
It was functioning fine only moments before. Took several 10 minute videos at 1080p 60fps with low aperture, low iso, shutter around 1/125, with ND filter 4, a lens hood, and my Sony UWP-D11 wireless Lav Mic shoe mounted and plugged in. Couldn’t of overheated?! 20 Celsius, partly cloudy, and breezy. Right?

Everything else still seems to be functioning relatively OK. Besides a few missing screws and covers there are minimal signs of wear (though I’ve owned it a year), LCD flip screen agile and vivid as ever, viewfinder has been finding views, buttons and switches are sturdy, lens is clearer than my glasses, and user interface shows no leg or slowness.

The only problem other than personal issues would be that my light meter seemed inaccurate lately, my photos/videos come out slightly underexposed, but perhaps it was only that I wasn't catering my metering modes to my scenes... but it was happening too often.
I haven’t dropped it in months, but I figure something has finally come loose inside from handling it or there's some gunk build up. IDK I hope you do? Thanks.

Check your owners manual for how to perform a full camera reset.

I have a similar issue with my D5300.

Small aperture settings create the shutter error and are cleared by switching back to automatic mode and persisting with the shutter button.

Problem occurs with both my lenses on the D5300 and the lens works perfectly on my D70s.

Tried all the things you have..

Took a series of shots under the same conditions but reduced aperture successively. At about f6.7, the exposure dropped dramatically which matches my experience under normal shooting conditions.

Repeated the experiment on the D70s with the same lens and no dramatic drop off in exposure, it behaved as expected.

In desperation, stripped the camera down, found nothing untoward inside, put it back together but still get the same press shutter button error.

It still shoots fine photos at wide apertures but anything above f8 can cause problems.

One interesting observations is that the onset of the problem is delayed at longer focal lengths.

Did you resolve your problem and if so how?

Nikon, 2 hours on the bus (  they only open during work hours 2 845am-445pm no weekends)     they want 225$ plus tax .. so I'm looking at 255 $ fix it, I could prob buy a new body ( even know this one looks crisp!)  at 300$   they said I can trade it in and get some money off a new body , but it would prob be way more expensive direct from nikon I'm guessing  at around 500+ and then what ever they discount me with the trade in
