How can I download photos from SD card when they are on the card, but I get a message that they are not supported. I am using a Nikon D7000 and have never had this problem.

Is this the same issue like this one?

nikon NEF files not supported when downloading - Say Hello! - NikonForums.com

If yes, it might be better to keep everything in one thread.

Where do you see that message, Arnie? What software program?

Can you copy your images to your computer using either a built in SD card reader or the Nikon USB cable that came with your camera?

We need a bit more info before making a suggestion.

I would not recommend that operation!

I would recommend instead you get your card in the reader
and copy the .NEF containing folder on the desktop.

Newb ... picking this up as I know I will encounter it soon.

We should move the NEF raw images to PC and convert on the PC? Windows 7 64-bit and Photoshop 5.5 here ...

I did see Adobe offers a (free) conversion tool.

Probably the most common workflow is to first transfer the files to your computer (usually copy, but moving is probably working, too) and then edit them on the computer using a program that can work with those files. When finished with editing, the photos usually are converted to a more universal file format like .jpg so that they can be viewed on a greater variety of devices (like TV sets, tablet computers, whatever). When you want to print the photos, you'll might want to use different settings for the afore mentioned file conversion compare to just viewing the photos on some sort of screen.
