In this first post, we have an aerobatic glider, a T6 Harvard with markings from F5 at Ljungbyhed and a modern aerobatic Sukhoi Su-29.

Peter - I see you're using two cameras here.  Do you use a monopod with either or are these all handheld?  Would an ND filter help to keep the aperture larger?  I see a lot of dust spots, which you educated me on awhile back.  I purchased a 10 stop ND for my big zoom thinking it would help when I'm attempting low shutter speed panning but it was too dark for my last outing.  In fact, it now looks like it may be too dark for any conditions unless I'm using a tripod.  If you were going to use one in the conditions shown here, which would you choose?

All handheld.

I should have cleaned the sensor and had planned to do so, but other things had higher priority at the end of the week.

When it comes to what ND to use, every stop halves the light. Going to bigger apertures from f/22, the first stop takes us to f/16, the next to f/11, the next to f/8, the next to f/5.6, the next to f/4, the next to f/2.8, the next to f/2, the next to f/1.4, the next to f/1 and the next to f/0.7 for a full 10-stop series. Using this ladder makes it easier to select what strength of ND is needed. This means that I could have maintained the 1/80 shutter speed for the Harvard but @f/8-11 using a 2-3 stop ND.

When I have tried 1/30" and lower in shutter priority in the past, even with ISO dialed down to the "low 1" setting, I get apertures of f/32 which makes even the slightest dust spot appear black and pronounced.  I guess I need a full set of ND filters for brighter/darker days.  One day I want to be able to get images like yours, and like these:

Here are some more: Parachute, Hercules, ambulance helicopter and JAS 39 Gripen. The reason for the D300 for the parachute soldier is that I needed the reach while they were still high up and didn't have the time to change body as they got lower. This turned out better than the ones at higher altitude.

Some of these need the horizon straightened as my left arm was getting a bit tired by now. I will get around to it for prints, but they will do for the web. The only adjustments I have done in post are some crops and some retouched spots.

Really amazing sets, Peter. I am blown away by the clarity you're getting with that 150-600mm HANDHELD!!! What the heck?! Ok, was PES_2018-08-25_09-57-55_600mm the aerobatic plane, and was it shot while upside down in the air? The first time I looked at it, I thought you must have caught a ride in one of the planes and somehow got above it.

I think my favorite of all of these is the Hercules dropping its load--that is a storytelling shot right there, and you caught the perfect moment. Such impressive work.

Thank you Nicole.

The shot you mentioned was shot at the entry point of a tunnel roll. If you look at the shadow of the elevator and the shadow from the wing on the wheel fairing, you will see what the orientation was relative to the sun.

The transport division from F7 always have a narrative to their show with the C-130. This year the theme was dropping, supplying and picking up paratroopers.
