not sure how to use d7200 focus selector lock

can someone explain this to me. not sure if should leave on . or L mode and what it us used for.

I do not use that model but I found this for you:

If you set this switch to L for "lock" the focus point cannot be changed
with the multi selector. This is relevant only if the method of focus se-
lection that you have chosen with the focus button is not AUTO.

Tip: If you have not used and not missed such a switch in the past, just
ignore it.

It is useful for left-eyed shooters who tend to change focus points with their nose. If you don't have that problem, just leave it in the open position.
