I think if you opted for the D5300 you would be very happy but you would always hanker for the D7100. Certainly I would. Either camera is very good indeed but the metering is superior in the D7100. Technically I believe it would be almost impossible to discern differences between two images of the same scene taken on each camera.

I have the 7100 now by the way. I've not opened it yet though.

Not had chance to put it through it's paces yet but it certainly feels more fun than the D5300 which in itself was a great camera.
It's quicker at shooting and focussing which is something I was looking for.

Images are pretty much the same, but the 7100 is a much more enjoyable experience to use and the controls are awesome. It also certainly has a noticeably better focusing system.
The 5300 was great, the 7100 is certainly better though. It's not as easy to pick up and just use, but with a little practice the extra control and options are very much appreciated.

Well I'm loving the 7100. A few days in and it feels like a million miles away from the 5300.

Once you get used to it, it's very easy to just pick up and use. Just leave it set on P or A when you turn it off, so if you need to grab it fast and shoot you will get decent exposures. I have my U1 setting on auto ISO, 100-6400, shutter speed no lower than 1/100, and I usually just leave it like that.

Good idea with P or A. I'll leave it on P for now when off just in case until I've had a few more days practice with it.
Love that level indicator on the viewfinder too.

I'm shooting in either aperture priority, shutter priority or fully manual now depending on where I am and what I'm doing.
I love this camera. It's very fast, it produces some quality results and I can change all my settings in the blink of an eye.
Here's a few examples of what I've been up to recently with it.

ok, I've spent about two minutes testing it in the spare room. I LOVE IT!

I am also in the market for a my first DSLR and I think in doing all the research like others have narrowed it down to this camera. I see you have a tamron lens on it. what model is it and how much did it hit you for. Also, Do you like shooting with it.

My main use lens is my tamron 17-50 non-VC. Love that lens.
