Hello!

I am interested in buying the Nikon D750 and NIKKOR 24-120mm kit lens. However, I'm wondering if now (this time of year) is the best time to buy.

I am planning to purchase the camera kit from B&H, and they have what seems to be a nice deal on the set right now at $2196.95 down from $3096.95. (This deal ends tonight, unfortunately!)

However, before I bite the bullet, I'm wondering (since I don't HAVE to have the camera right now) if I would be better served to wait and see if a better deal comes along? I'm not sure what current price trends have been, but I'd like to get the best deal possible.

I saw where Adam posted earlier in this forum that B&H was selling the D750, the "24-120mm F4 lens, battery grip, extra battery, memory card, and a bag all for just $1996!" I wish I had known about this sale, as it's no fun to pay $200 more and only get the camera and lens knowing that this deal happened!

What would you do?

It's tough to predict what will happen next, unfortunately.  It's possible that there will be better deals, but at the same time, all the months spent waiting is time you could be out shooting, enjoying the new camera.

Your call at the end of the day.  If I were to guess, that $1996 deal might return in the fall.  But is waiting that long worth the savings?

It is never the right time to buy if you want to be sure that you get the rock bottom price... The future is very unpredictable, but a camera you get that suits your needs better will leave you with lots of photos you wouldn't have gotten if you had waited. In your case, I would definitely go for it if you have the funds available.

I bought the kit for my wife's birthday present last month.  Adorama was running the same $1,996 deal.  You could also order directly from the Nikon USA web site for the same price at that time.  nikonusa.com is now showing it for ~$2,199.  Adorama and B&H both usually run whatever sale Nikon is offering, sometimes for a couple dollars less.  I expect the sales will end for a few weeks until the new mirrorless announcement is made and they determine how it might sell.  Then we may see more "clearance" sales of current models.

I had a co-worker who did that with PCs.  He wanted to wait until he could find "the best" price.  By then, he knew they had a newer version coming out, so he decided to wait for the newer version.  Last I talked to him it had been at least 5 different generations of PCs and he still had not decided to purchase.  There may always be a lower price and there may or may not be a newer version of the same model.  Doesn't really matter...find a deal you like and get something that you can enjoy...unless, of course, you don't need and can do fine with what you have now...and then, the best deal or newest model doesn't really matter...

One thing about waiting for the D760 is that I wouldn't be surprised if it gets the D7500 lens mount, which means no metering with Ai lenses. I hope I am wrong, but I have a feeling that Nikon might do something boneheaded like that and maybe remove the second memory slot and the contacts for a grip as well.

  1. that would be a serious dent to Nikon's retrofit strategy
  2. If only I could be convinced of cards absolute reliability
  3. that is a very dirty thought from you Peter! :P

… or even worse: the absence of vertical grip controls!!!

Unfortunately, that is exactly what they did to the poor D7xxx series. I would really have liked the sensor, signal processor, autofocus and buffer that the D7500 has, but for my use the D7200 is the last usable Nikon in that segment.

I just hope they don't cripple its bigger brother the same way.

I must admit here, very "selfishingly", that my concerns are

brutally limited to FF bodies though I understand yours! :P

I do have plans for a replacement for my D700 and would like that to be a D850, but things get expensive when you have to get a new computer as well as the body, grip, batteries, charger, memory cards and a card reader... My MBP 15" from mid 2010 doesn't handle larger than 24 MP files without having to wait for the computer to catch up. I don't do enough professionally to be able to get the full tax deductions on such a purchase anymore.

Already out. It's now called the Z6.

I got my first D850 in Décember 2017 and it was a good decision

though it came with secondary costs.

Already with my 2x D810, my 2009 MacPro was rather slow in terms

of data transfer but the processing power was sufficient. The larger

files of the 45.7 MS chip were putting too much pressure on the old

faithfull; so I decided — at the same time — to get the iMac i7 5k to

replace it as main machine for processing. Thunderbolt 3 is brilliant:

from the XQD card, and through a compatible reader, 600 files are co-

pied to the desktop in a jiffy: -/+ 75 seconds!

I also have a brilliant 2012 MBP 17" that I use only for tethered session,

clients meetings and personal use.

Already out. It's now called the Z6.

I doubt I will ever be a mirrorless user!
