Thanks! I was hand holding the beast of a lens. The whale watching boat was very crowded and a tripod would have created more problems then it would have solved. Out of about 40 shots I got about 10 useful images  As has been said... you already bought the card...shoot away!

Malice: If only getting to Sweden were that easy! But I'm pretty sure Peter already has the photography project thoroughly and capably covered.  :)

snell: Wow! That is indeed a beast of a lens--I have the Tamron equivalent, and I really can't use it without a tripod. I get no keepers if I try that, so getting 10 out of 40 is actually quite impressive to me.

You guys really need to get decent monopods...easy to move around, but still gives you the support...With a moving boat, you may not have gotten much better since that can be just as bad, but you wouldn't have had to wrestle the lens!

True! I've needed one for a long time but never get around to acquiring one. Maybe if I used that lens more, I'd be more on top of getting the monopod. And if I had the monopod, maybe I'd use the lens more.

One of the best investments I ever made!  Well, technically it is 3 of the best investments since I now have 3...Always leave one at each house and use the "best" for the 200-400.  They come in handy even with the 70-200 if you are going to be shooting for a long time!

When shooting sports like LaCrosse, Flag Football, Basketball I use my gimbal on my monopod almost 100% of the time.  Really takes the load off my arms and I can lean all the way to the ground to get individual shots.

Steve, thanks for posting that lovely set of nature photos. The butterfly is especially attractive--were you fairly close with a shorter focal length on that one? It looks like you have quite a bit of depth of field, so I'm trying to figure out your focal length and aperture! I don't do close up very well--it's something I'm working on. :) Also glad to see you here--hope you're doing well. Treatments going ok?

No I was a ways away. I had been shooting Swans that were a long ways away with no Tripod. I got in my car and drove down the road a ways and this butterfly landed on the road other side. I just shot right away. My Shutter was up at 2000. My aperture was 6.3 and ISO was automatic at 5000. I was using my Nikon 80-400 and was extended out all the way to 400.

As for my health and treatments. The treatments have not shrunk the cancer and the cancer only has spread so they have quit with the chemo. Right one I don’t know the next step. Thank you for asking. I can patiently wait at this time.

Sorry for the long reply.

I don't suppose you have any behind-the-scenes photos or videos of you operating your monopod and gimbal while leaning all the way to the ground? I can't quite visualize how this is working, but I will definitely say that it is an appealing idea! I hadn't thought of a gimbal on a monopod...

Thanks for the insight into how you got that shot. Nice job! I'm so sorry to hear that your treatments haven't helped--I really hope they can find something that will work for you. Don't know if you believe in the power of prayer, but I do, so I'll be praying for you and your doctors.

I don't think a gimbal would work for me.  No real need for it.  The only lenses I have that I'd use on a monopod both have lens collars.  I mount those to the monopod and move forward.  Probably all in what you get used to...
