Hello,
I have a D3300 and two lense. A Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300 and a 18-55.
The 70-300 works fine, the 18-55 however will not take pictures. Camera is fully charged and no settings have been changed as far as I’m aware. You push the button and nothing happens, no error codes or messages come up on the display.
Is it something I have done?
Is the lense faulty? It’s only 18 months old.
Many thanks
Paul.

Hello,

Assuming that your 18-55 lens has worked in the past with the camera, my guess is that the camera fails to actually autofocus with that lens, while working with your other lens. This would explain why pushing the button does not take a picture.

Not being able to focus can have different reasons, so please first try the following and then let us know whether it helped.

One possible issue can be the electric contacts between the lens and the camera body. Try to clean them, both on the lens and camerabody (see other articles on this forum on how to clean the electric contacts) and see if it helps.

If cleaning the electric contacts does not help, a check whether the (auto)focussing is the problem (but has different reasons for not working) is to set to manual focus (if my guess is correct then the camera will take a picture, but it might be out-of-focus unless you are focussing manually) . While the D3300 does not have a physical switch on the camera body, I think that you can change between manual and auto focussing using the menu (pay attention that such changed setting would also apply to your other lens, so you will want to revert it possibily after the test). Also Nikon has produced different versions of the 18-55 lens - if it is an AF-S lens you might find a physical switch (A/M) on the lens, to change between manual (M) and auto (A) focussing (this would avoid changing the setting in the menu).

Start by checking that you don't have an A/M switch in the wrong position.

If that isn't the case, it is time to clean the contacts. I have posted about that now and again since the forum started. One such post is here.

If that doesn't solve the problem, you will need to try your lens on another body. If you have a working relationship with a local dealer, they might let you try your lens on one of their demo cameras.Otherwise, you need to find an acquaintance with a Nikon so you can try it.

Thank you both for your responses.
I have cleaned the electrical contacts but this made no difference.
When I change the focus mode to manual I can take pictures with the 18-55 lense but they are out of focus. I seem to be unable to get the lense to manually focus on any object.
I will try the lense in another camera ASAP.
Many thanks again

What version of the 18-55 is it? There have been 6 versions over the years and most of them have some quirk that can lead to the camera locking up.
