The light was far from ideal as it was hard and unforgiving around 2PM. I decided to make that hard light a feature for this set.

It is possible to do botanical impressionism even in hard light.

Dang, Peter. You can make hard light look fantastic. I usually skip taking photos during afternoon hours, if I can, but now I see that I've just been lazy.

The problem is putting yourself in the right headspace. If you start playing with the shadows and highlights, as well as raising contrast and saturation by selecting a Picture Control like [LS]Landscape or [VI]Vivid and then raising the ISO to lower the DR slightly without getting noise, the results can look like these.

Hm...this is definitely worth some experimentation.

The botanicals are all [VI]Vivid, the stone wall with the water is [LS]Landscape. This is my recipe for these mid-day and afternoon hard-lit situations. I learned quite a bit about shooting in all conditions during the One week... challenges.
