Sigma’s APO 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM is an advanced optical design of this 10x power high-performance zoom lens that covers the standard-to-super-telephoto range, now with the added advantage of Sigma’s own Optical Stabilization which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. For many photographers, having an “all-in-one” lens is an absolute dream. Especially for nature photographers, the idea of a lens suitable for landscape photography at the short end of the zoom range, while still having enough reach for wildlife is a great option. Add to that, the ability to close focus on small objects in the field such as flowers and it’s the perfect backpackers’ lens. Four SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide optimum color correction & sharpness throughout the entire zoom range and Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range.

Obviously the photo will also be affected by the camera used. I shoot with a D600 using my Sigma 50-500mm lens.

More shots so you can check the quality the lens produces.

Thanks for the pictures, I've been thinking about buying this lens.  I read some reviews that say it isn't as sharp at the 500 mm end, do you find that to be true?

I have found mine to be sharp. The last 3 shots were all at full zoom. The first few were very close to full and guy flipping off the pier was full zoom. So I have been very happy with it.

Thanks.  I would be mainly shooting at the 500mm end, and I was worried about several reviews commenting that the lens lost sharpness.

Hmm, it's on sale at Henry's (Canadian chain) for $100 off.  But the Nikon 80-400mm is on sale for an even lower price ($430 off).  What to do . . .

I'm stuck in my decision.  I also know the 300mm f/4 upgrade is supposed to be coming.  What to do . . .

I know this isn't going to help because we all get "gear lust" but I heard a great point on waiting for updated equipment:

"Every photography you've ever fell in love with, every shot that inspires you to be a better photographer was taken by a camera and through a lens that is already available."

It is the most used lens in my bag.
