Sometime before midnight (whatever time zone you are in) this Sunday, 3 June 2018, post the best photo you have taken this week. Any subject, any style—just give us your best shot.

If you can, list your EXIF info and any special lighting setups you may have used.

I visited the Phoenix Zoo this week. I usually get there at 8AM before the heat of the day as well as the stroller caravan that follows at 9AM.

I think this is my favorite of the week.  Another rainy, foggy day in the park.

Dean, I love the detail on the birds, but I think my favorite is that mountain lion. I suppose another advantage to going so early is that the animals are still active--it's nice to see that big cat so alert. They seem to hide out and nap during the bright, hot daylight hours.

Mark, that is atmospheric quality is fantastic. "Middle earth" is exactly the right title for that image! I wish I was where you are--that's beautiful. No chance of fog here for many months.

Peter, I'm really enjoying the play of light and shadow in both of those images. That pool of light in the cellar is so much fun, but the richness of the light and shadow in the chapel is just gorgeous.

Bobby, that is beautiful. Those eyes--wow! And the bokeh is wonderful. What a great moment. Love the eye contact!!

Tony, lovely work on that one. The natural light worked well, eh? The reds turned out great!

I spent the weekend down in Lincoln County--spent the first night out at Spring Valley State Park just seeing what I could do in the dark. It wasn't a great night for Milky Way photography because the moon was following the Milky Way as it rose, but I gave it a shot anyway.

And then on Saturday I spent the day in an environmental portraiture class taught by Mike Okimoto of Reno. Fantastic class, and we got to photograph a tremendously interesting person--Kelli Garni, formerly of the band Quiet Riot. He is now an artist and owns an art gallery/cafe in Pioche, Nevada, called Ghost Town Art & Coffee. It's an old blacksmith shop that he's transformed into an art studio/gallery and cafe. Probably one of the most interesting places I've been, and I'm quite sure it was the best food we had all weekend. His art is intriguing, consisting of pieces he's made out of found objects from the old mines in the Pioche area. If I could afford a piece, I'd buy one without hesitation--really liked his style.

Anyway, here are a few of my favorites from the class:

D810, Nikkor 24-70, various settings. Exif for each image in Flickr.

Kelly was incredibly gracious and patient and allowed us to invade his studio for the afternoon. If you ever make it to Pioche, I recommend the Pioche Burger at Kelly's cafe--soooooo goooood!!!

Thanks!  You wouldn't like it here much for night photos, though.  We haven't seen the moon or stars for weeks.  Maybe this week.  The forecast shows clear skies for the first time in quite awhile.

Love the portraits.  That looks like a great place to visit if I ever make it out there.

I think there's a bit more light pollution out your way too, so that makes it hard to photograph the stars as well. But, that being said, I'd still love some lush green plants and foggy forests full of mystery. We don't get that out here at all! Maybe a few times a year on the fog, and the green doesn't stick around long. Too hot and dry...

And Lincoln county is only a couple hours or so north of Las Vegas. Next time you make it to Vegas, maybe you should go on a little side trip. :) (I guess by the time you get to Pioche, it's almost three hours...so maybe not.)

The only reason I go to Las Vegas is for an annual conference.  Some years attendance is optional, some it's not.  Depends on management.  I'm pretty sure no one would miss me for a day.  I have photos from the strip but haven't done any exploring outside the city.  Maybe next year.

Shenandoah National Park has some pretty good star gazing spots.  In summer the haze and humidity is more of a problem than light pollution, I think.  And the bugs...  My wife informed me the other day that we're going back up for a night for the meteor shower in August, though.  If the moon is right I'd like to try capturing the milky way.  I've never tried that.

We do have lots of green.  The mountain laurel was in full bloom this weekend.  And with all the damp weather the ferns are thriving.

Dang...you do have lots of green. That's really pretty.

I'm guessing it's the Perseids your wife is hoping to see. They're on my radar again this year since we should have a mostly moonless night while they're at their peak. I attempted to photograph them a couple years ago with questionable results. Going to try again this year--hopefully a bit better prepared this time. The Milky Way is on the opposite side of the sky, but shoot it anyway. :)  Hope for dry, clear weather!

Skyline Drive does have some great places for shooting night shots, but not nearly as many cloudless nights.  Same goes for our place at the river...Very little light pollution but the conditions aren't always right for shooting.  I'm hoping to be down there and shooting he Perseids as well this August!

We'll have to start a Perseids thread for everyone to get together and compare notes and shots!
