Every lens I have purchased (new or used) has come with a lens hood designed for the lens.  I use them regularly.  I do not know the model you are talking about or if it is designed for a particular lens or type of lens.  I would recommend forgetting about trying to use a hand...

A hand or a hat will probably do as bad a job as that thing. If you want a better hood than what is standard for the lens as designed, a compendium is the way to go.

There was a time when lenses didn't always come with shades. I'm not sure but I sometimes wonder if Canon ships their lenses with shades even now. I see an awful lot of Canon users walking around with no shades on their lenses at all. Maybe they're making a fashion statement.

Anyway, I would always try to use the shade that's designed for a particular lens. Peter is probably right about the compendium shades... but they tend to be unwieldy in use.
