This evening I decided to take a few indoor shots using my Nikon D200 and Nikon SB-24 Speedlight.  The speedlight never fired off a shot.  The batteries are brand new Energizer AA Ultimate.  The on light comes on, but I cannot get the test button to fire off when pressed.  I tried every setting on the Speedlight, but no success.  I cleaned the hot shoe and the connectors on the speedlight, but unfortunately, no luck.  Is it safe to assume that the bulb is dead?  It is an older speedlight, however it really has not seen all much action.

Thanks for any assistance.

Looks like I picked a bad week to quit drinking.  :))

It might be the bulb or it might be a large capacitor. Both components age, even when not in use. Whichever it is makes for an expensive repair on a speedlight that is old enough not to integrate with the meter in the camera.

You will find that flash is much easier with an i-TTL capable flash such as the three-digit models from Nikon or a modern Godox unit. Should you decide to go with Godox, do yourself a favour and get the radio commander as well. Off-camera flash opens up so many more lighting options, and a radio link is much more reliable than IR light.

Thank you very much, Peter.  Greatly appreciated.
