Hi I have a D5600 (not available on the camera selection when I joined) I've found the self timer - put it to Automatic focus - selected AF - auto- area and placed the camera 1.5 meters away.

But when I sit down (for a simple passport picture) it won't produce a picture in focus. Is it not capable of doing this?  Thanks

I'm just guessing, but if your not in the photo when your setting up the shot its focusing on the background.  When you step in to the frame the focus won't change, it's still on the background.

What is the minimum focus distance for your lens?  You don't indicate which lens your are using or any other info other than the body.  Some lenses won't focus that close.

Hi it's the kit lens 18-55mm  1:3.5 5.6G  I had to focus it manually in the end using a makeshift mannequin. It will focus at close distance manually and automatically but not on self timer unless there's a fault or it's not designed to do so.

If it's the latter it's a glaring omission.

If it did refocus on selftimer, how many shots would you think would be ruined because you aren't placed exactly right in relation to the focus area? Manual focus is the way to go using the selftimer or interval timer.

Autofocus should work when the camera takes the picture after the timer has run down. As I am the object in front of the camera it should focus on me automatically - this is a very simple task which I want the camera to do.

Get yourself a ML-L3 remote. They're cheap, and it will focus the camera while you're in front of it.
