Hello

I've a D5000 i've had quite some time.

I am always used to the buffer reading around r03 when taking photos. So burst of 3 photos before I wait for buffer to drain.

I always use the same memory card so nothing different with that regard it's a high quality sandisk extreme.

I previously used 18-200mm and recently the 50mm 1.4 AF-S

I bought the 50mm 1.8 AF-s just to try out in comparison to the above 1.8 AF-S to see if it was truely better.

Anyway when I attach this 50mm 1.8 AF-s my buffer count increases to r10 and I can pretty much snap away to my hearts content without waiting for the buffer to drain. How does changing the lens affect this?!! Am I missing something?

Assuming that you haven’t (inadvertently) changed from RAW to JPEG, the output size of the file will be the same.

So there should be no difference in buffer loading.

The one extra thing that may take time (even so not related to the buffer load is focussing) - however this would assume that your refocussing with the other lenses is really slow, suggesting that your taking most of your captures in difficult situations.

Therefore my first guess would be that - together with mounting the lens - you also changed unintentionally some other settings; if it would have been the 1.4 allowing for faster focuqssing over the 1.8 that would have sound possible, even so not by a factor if 3.
