Hello all! 

         Trying to fix my boss's camera. I'm an IT guy, not necessarily a camera expert. They claim nothing was physically damaged, and it looks fine from the outside. She just went to take photos and noticed the black bar on the bottom. After some research, I assumed it might be a shutter issue, but the angle of this is what makes me think otherwise.

 

The black band is always the same size, and always present. Not present on the screen, and doesn't matter what lens we use. 

 

We would have to mail it in to any repair facility, and we'd be at their mercy. I would rather have more information about what's actually going on.

Any additional information you can provide?  Your statement:  "They claim nothing was physically damaged, and it looks fine from the outside." indicates to me that SOMETHING happened to the camera...What ever it was that caused that statement is likely the reason for the problem.  I am going to go out on a limb and guess that the camera was dropped...without any additional information, sending it off to Nikon for repair is probably going to be your ultimate solution...

What camera is it? If it is a DSLR, put a fully charged battery in the camera, remove the lens, activate cleaning mode and look if something seems amiss inside the mirror box with the mirror raised and shutter open.

You're using a flash, right? What's the shutter speed?

YES! Thank you so much! The little shutter blades were stuck. One of them looks pretty bent. Now I know what the problem is. Photo attached. Thank you so much!
