Hello, I'm a total newb with external speedlite photography.

Can anyone help me get my external flash going with my camera?

I just got a Nikon D750 with a Sigma 24-105mm F4 lens.

And I got a Yongnuo YN685 Speedlite.

I do not have a trigger.

I am trying to have the Nikon do the light flash, where the flash sets off the external YN685 flash.

Whatever that process is called? Is there a name for it?

I set the YN685 to "603 Slave", by holding down the "Mode" button, and then turning the dial to "603 Slave". Then pressed the middle "set" button. The redlights started flashing indicating it was ready.

I set the Nikon D750 to Commander.

Pressed "Menu > Custom Settings > Bracketing Flash > Flash cntrl for built-in Flash > Commander Mode Group A and Channel 1.

Initially this option wasn't available to me, as I had not turned the left dial to "M" on the camera.

I did not know this -- again, i'm a newb with this camera.

Ok.

Popped up the D750's built-in flash.

Took a picture, and I got a black picture.

The built-in D750 flash did go off, but slightly less than full-blast.

And the external YN685 did NOT fire off.

I need help getting this to work.

So complicated.

I think that the YN685 doesn't support Nikon's advanced wireless lighting (AWL) and needs a Yongnuo radio trigger for anything more than strobist use remotely. This is only from reading the manual as I don't use Yongnuo speedlights myself.

You should be able to use the S1/S2 optical slave modes that just fires the flash when the camera's flash does, but not the built-in master mode for the pop-up flash that uses IR light to control the slave flash output from the camera.

The 603 slave mode is a radio slave one, for the 603 transmitter, the 622 mode is for the 622 transmitter.

Peter is right on (as usual). The only way to trigger the flash from the camera flash is with S1 or S2 slave modes, and that would be strictly manual flash settings.
