I never bothered with them before, but one came on a recent rifle purchase, and I like it!  I wish they still made them, it seems like a quality optical sight at a reasonable price (when they made them).  The scope is a Nikon  ''Buck  Master II, 4-12X''.  The rifle is a Ruger M-77 Mk. II Hawkeye chambered for .338 Winchester Magnum.  It wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but for the price and all the ''goodies'' that went with it, I'da been stupid NOT to have bought it!  Rifle, (like new) scope, loading dies, bullets, brass, and loaded ammunition all for about $500.00 less than the rifle alone is worth.  Sometimes God smiles on us. (BTW, I paid the man what he wanted for the outfit, he said he wouldn't haggle on the price-I didn't argue)

Nice rifle and scope.

Nikon made great rifle, spotting scopes, and binoculars. I have a binocular and its sharp and clear. I don't know where this model riflescope fits into the Nikon scheme. Too bad they discontinued them.

The Buckmaster II  4-12X is probably in the middle of the line up.  I checked e-bay and they sell for around $300.00 used.  The one that came on the rifle has ballistic circles to 500yd.

"Monarch" was the top of the Nikon riflescope lineup.  But the Buckmaster was NOT a bad scope, and with , Nikon glass, well, it was certainly better than average.

Where Nikon lost the grip, was not coming out with a 30mm tube line of scopes.  Contrary to convention, the 30mm tube isn't to allow "more light", but to provide for more vertical movement of the reticle for LONG range shooting.  Concurrently the big Tactical Makers were doing laser etched reticles in glass elements, vs. the old physical, FRAGILE, wire cross hairs.

Sporting optics wise, my 1980s vintage Nikon 9x25 Compact binoculars, routinely put shame to Leitz, Swarovski and other ultra premium $$$ glass.

With Nikon absent the riflescope world, I'd strongly suggest the Vortex brand, and the Viper grade line of scopes.  Their Razor brand is WAY up there in performance, but also in cost.

Confession.  My spotting scope is the absolute Top of the LIne of Vortex Razor that they offer.  Because "spotting scope" and that is what you DO where those are concerned!

This is where you add me into the Caliber Envy category.

Mr. Elk or Mr. Moose are not going to like you very much.  Not very much at all !

Good info. I liked Nikon budget scopes as well as Burris. I don't think at the budget end there's much competition from what I've seen with these brands, but I may be wrong. Yes too bad Nikon dropped their riflescopes. I do like their binos and have their budget and bit older 10x50 Action.
