Hi everybody , sure hope you can help me .

I purchased a 2nd hand D7100 c/w 2 lenses .. I'm currently using a VR 10-105ed dx lens .. whilst it takes reasonable pictures , they are just not as sharp as I'm expecting.

As to my background , I was a photographer in The NZ forces for 20 years before retiring. Starting on 5x4 Linhof plate cameras , roll film cameras .. ( 6x7 Pentax - favorite ) and many different Nikon's of various models .. all film , It was not uncommon to shoot 10 or 20 rolls per day .. so I'm quite familiar with F/nos , shutter speeds film speeds etc etc as well as film processing ..

Back to the d7100 .. Its just not as sharp as I would like . Ive been going thru the AF fine tuning process .. trying all manner of settings both +ve and -ve .. but cannot get the lens to go crisp ..

Am I missing something .. I know how to hand hold a camera as well as use a tripod .. etc

I'm certainly puzzled ..

I also own 2 coolpix cameras L 820 and L120 as well as an Old Nikkormat 35mm camera .. so I'm certainly a Nikon fan

Any help to make an old man happy .. greatly Appreciated

Paul

Welcome to the forums...

Perhaps if you could post an example or two of your less than sharp photos (along with all pertinent shooting data such as shutter speed, aperture and any filters you used, etc., we might be better able to help you. The D7100 is usually a very capable camera but I'm sure you know that there are always exceptions.

You mentioned that you have a second lens for your D7100. Does your D7100 also produce low quality photos when using that lens?

The cameras you have are good and does a good job. But sometimes the ISO units has many things to do with the sharpness and white balance and more. It would be convenient if you could just post a few examples.

Hi Ellinor , sorry for the delay , been busy.. as we all seem to be these days

I have been adjusting the AF fine tune setting on my D7100 as well ,[ Plus 6 ] I am not sure that this is the best setting as yet , this is a work in progress .. and a pain in the butt.. but once done , its done , hopefully.

Another question / observation .. the camera does not appear to use the AF fine tune setting , if the AF fine tune setting is not set to 'Single spot' . Has anybody else noticed this ?? It appears to use the default setting of 0 .. has anybody else discovered this ??

Thanks to all Nikon users .. Attached are several images for your comments .. All are hand held ..

Regards Paul

PS .. images are ore from my wifes garden .. ( I dont have a garden ) .. I have Nikon Cameras .. much more fun ..

Hi Everybody .. I have "assumed" the shooting data is viewable on the images I have posted .. If not pse advise and I will dig it out from the Exif data

Kind Regards to all .. Paul

Hello Paul

Unfortunately the shooting data isn't available on your pictures.

If they were hosted on flickr, the data would be there to see unless you deliberately denied it to viewers.

They generally look ok to my less-than-perfect eyes.

The other issue could possibly be the forum software causing pictures to not show as they really are.

I suppose the real test would be with a target test chart of some kind.

I’m incapable of holding a camera steady, so anything that doesn’t look totally duff is a bonus.

It’s high shutter speeds or a tripod for me!

Is it a Nikon lens and do you have the same issues with the other lens?
